Indiana Business Kicks Gender Stereotypes Aside and Offers Paid Parental Leave for Mothers and Fathers
As of Friday, June 23rd Hanapin Marketing offers 100% paid parental leave time to new parents
Bloomington, Indiana, July 5th – According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 28% of companies in the Professional Business Services industry across the nation offer paid parental leave. That number is even less when you look at the averages of maternity leave and paternity leave separately. Simply put, while some companies do have benefits, most of the time it’s only for new mothers, not fathers, and the payout is not 100% of salary.
Recognizing that the US is extraordinarily behind the times – the US is dead last out of 41 developed nations for a lack of federal mandated paid parental leave – many companies are stepping up to the plate and implementing new policies on their own. Hanapin Marketing, a digital marketing agency based in Indiana, is proud to join the ranks of companies making big changes, like Chobani, by now offering 6 weeks of paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers at 100% of the employee’s salary.
“When considering how to craft our Paid Parental Leave policy, we chose to offer equal paid time for mothers and fathers, because that’s the message we want to send to our company and to our community. We believe that fathers and mothers should equally be able to spend time bonding with their newborns. We want to do our part in eliminating the gender stereotypes about parenting and encourage the change that this country so desperately needs. We give all parents equal permission to be away from work without affecting their status and position within the company, regardless of gender,” said Rebecca Reott, Director of HR at Hanapin.
By offering equal leave time as an equal benefit, Hanapin hopes to help balance any potential gender-based motherhood penalties, an unfortunate but real reality facing the business world that needs to be eliminated, as well as influence more businesses in the community and the nation to implement this much-needed benefit to growing families across the U.S.
Even as a small business, Hanapin consistently works to be a leader in workplace benefits. In January of 2014, the company implemented a policy to provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees in accordance with the 1993 Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). At the time, Hanapin did not meet the mandate of having 50 or more employees in office to have to legally implement it. The company has almost doubled since then, but with a strong base of remote workers, they still don’t meet the requirement to have to offer FMLA.
In addition to paid leave for new mothers and fathers, Hanapin’s policy also covers paid leave for adoption, and some surrogate and foster situations.
